Study Abroad Scholarships

Study abroad programs costs can be offset by using grants and scholarships. Typically, scholarship applications are due about six to nine months before you plan to study. We recommend applying to scholarships as soon as possible, even before acceptance.

USU Exchange

The Office of Global Engagement is offering scholarships for USU exchange programs. Scholarships up to $1,500 per semester per student may be available.

Gilman Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients

If you are currently receiving a Pell Grant, then you are eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship for study abroad.

USU Scholarships

• USU Honors Study Abroad Scholarship 
• USU Office of Global Engagement - Exchange Scholarships: $1000 for USU exchange partners, $1500 for selected partners.
• USU Office of Global Engagement - Youthlinc Scholarships: For students applying for USU - Youthlinc programs.
• USU Scholarships: USU departments will sometimes offer study abroad scholarships to specific programs. Check with the department.
• USU Scholarships - CHaSS Experiential Learning Fund and Heravi Peacebuilding Scholarships: The CHaSS Experiential Learning Fund is designed to remove economic barriers that prevent students from participating in experiential activities. Students can receive financial assistance with a variety of costs necessary to complete their experiential learning project.
  The Heravi Peacebuilding Scholarship is offered for particular programs and more information can be found in the link above.
• USU Scholarships - Department of History: The Mehdi Heravi International Experience Scholarship is for History and Religious Studies majors to participate in study abroad.
• USU Scholarships - Department of Political Science Majors (Political Science, International Studies and Law & Constitutional Studies Majors): Take complete application and a copy of your unofficial transcript to the Department of Political Science office, located in Old Main, room 320. 
• USU Scholarships - Huntsman School Global Opportunities Scholarships: For USU Huntsman School of Business undergraduate students, preference given to upperclassmen, with minimum GPAs of 3.0.
• USU Scholarships - Liz Allred and JP Spicer-Escalante Global Scholarship: All USU students are welcome to apply, though there is a preference for Business and Spanish majors and minors. Five to seven scholarships will be awarded each year.
• USU Scholarships -  Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP): The John K. Nicholson Memorial Scholarship is for LAEP majors to participate in study abroad at the University of Ljubljana. 

U.S. Government Scholarships

• Boren Scholarships and Fellowships: For undergrad or grad study in areas, languages, and files of study that are critical to U.S. national security. On campus deadline: Three weeks before the Boren deadline. Please complete all parts of the Boren application before our deadline and schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor to review before you submit the application.
• Critical Language Scholarships: Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. students. Deadline: December.
• Gilman Scholarship: For students currently receiving Pell Grants. Deadline: September for Spring, March for Fall/Academic Year placements.
• Gilman-McCain Scholarship: A new national scholarship named after the late senator John McCain, the Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Regional/Country Specific Scholarships

• Asia Institute - International Engineering Programs: $1000 open to students studying STEM related fields
• Baden-Wuerttemberg Scholarship: For USU students who wish to study at Hochshule Ravensburg Weingarten University, Germany. See http://www.hs-weingarten.de for courses of study in engineering or business, taught in English.
• Bridging Scholarship: Study in Japan in any major. No language required. Deadline: April for Fall and October for Spring.
• BUTEX North American Scholarships: Scholarship is open to undergraduate students applying for select universities in the United Kingdom. See list of eligible members on website.
• Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX): CBYX is a yearlong fellowship program to study, work, and live with a host in Germany, and is for participants in business, engineering, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields. Deadline: December.
• National Central University Summer Scholarship: 2 summer scholarships for Chinese language learning at National Central University. Scholarship winners will pay USU tuition for the number of credits received for their program, but will not have to pay any additional fees to National Central University.
• Spanish Government Scholarship for Language Study at Fundación: For students studying abroad at Fundacion of La Rioja.
• Freeman Asia Scholarship: Provides funding for U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.
• German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): Undergraduate funding for Germany includes a monthly stipend, health insurance, and a lump sum for travel.
• Japanese Government Scholarships: Apply through the USU Study Abroad Office. For students applying to partner schools in Japan. Deadlines vary depending on start dates of study.
• European University Viadrina: €360 Euro per month grants available for USU students who wish to study at VEU.

Graduate School Scholarships

• American Australian Association: Graduate or post-graduate students accepted to an Australian educational institution for 1 year.
• Fulbright U.S. Student Program: Provides funding for up to one academic year of study or research abroad, after graduation. Deadline: See Global Engagement.
• Marshall Scholarship: For graduate or undergraduate students studying at any British university.

• Go Overseas Scholarships: For graduate and undergraduate students offering various awards.
• Fund for Education Abroad: Provides funding for undergraduate students participating in semester or summer study abroad programs.
• Fund for Education Abroad (Rainbow SIG): Provides scholarship opportunities for members of the LGBTQ+ community that wish to participate in academic programs abroad.
• LGBTQ students can use the Equality Utah scholarship toward study abroad programs.
• National Society of Collegiate Scholars: Honors program that offers generous merit awards, scholar at sea awards, and scholar abroad awards.
• Phi Kappa Phi: For semester study abroad, with a GPA of 3.75 or better. Must have between 30 and 90 credits. Deadline: February.
• Rotary Scholarship: Recipients serve as Rotarian ambassadors of goodwill. Contact your local Rotary Club to see if they offer study abroad scholarships.
• The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation: For international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. Must be a U.S. citizen, GPA of 3.2 or better. Deadline: February.
