Study Abroad Scholarships

mountainsStudy abroad programs costs can be offset by using grants and scholarships. Typically, scholarship applications are due about six to nine months before you plan to study.

USU Exchange

The Office of Global Engagement is offering  $2,000 scholarships for USU exchange partners and $3,000 for selected partners. 

Gilman Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients 

If you are currently receiving a Pell Grant, then you are eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship for study abroad. 

The Winter 2021, Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Academic Year 2021-2022 application cycle is for study abroad programs generally beginning between December 2020 and October 2021. This cycle encompasses spring semester, quarter, calendar year, winter inter-session and January term programs that are a minimum of three weeks in length.

2021 Gilman Scholarship Timeline

Mid-August  2020 Online application opens for Winter 2021, Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Academic Year 2021-2022 study abroad programs and internships. 
October 6, 2020 Student deadline for submission of online study abroad advisor and financial aid advisor section.
October 13, 2020 Advisor deadline for submission of online study abroad advisor and financial aid advisor section.
End of November 2020 All applicants are notified of the status of their application via email. Study abroad and financial aid advisors will be notified of scholarship recipients via email. A list of the recipients will be available on the Gilman website.
December 2020  Scholarship recipients must accept/decline their award and submit required documentation.

USU/CIEE $1,000 Academic Consortium Scholarship
One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to one current Utah State University student participating in a fall or spring semester program with CIEE. 

USU/CIEE Open Campus Grants
Grants may be awarded to current Utah State University students participating in a 3-block Open Campus fall or spring semester program with CIEE at any of the Global Institute locations.

For students applying for USU - Youthlinc programs. 

USU Scholarships
USU departments will sometimes offer study abroad scholarships to specific programs. Check with the department. 

USU Scholarships - Department of Political Science Majors (Political Science, International Studies and Law & Constitutional Studies Majors)
Take complete application and a copy of your unofficial transcript to the Department of Political Science office, located in Old Main, room 320. 

Huntsman School Global Opportunities Scholarships
For USU Huntsman School of Business undergraduate students, preference given to upperclassmen, with minimum GPAs of 3.0. 

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships  
For undergrad or grad study in areas, languages, and files of study that are critical to U.S. national security. On campus deadline: Three weeks before the Boren deadline. Please complete all parts of the Boren application before our deadline and schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor to review before you submit the application.

Critical Language Scholarships
Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. students.
Deadline: December.

Gilman Scholarship
For students currently receiving Pell Grants.
Deadline: September for Spring, March for Fall/Academic Year placements.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship
A new national scholarship named after the late senator John McCain, the Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

Baden-Wurttemburg Scholarship
For USU students who wish to study at Hochshule Ravensburg Weingarten University, Germany. See for courses of study in engineering or business, taught in English.

Bridging Scholarship
Study in Japan in any major. No language required. Deadline: April for Fall and October for Spring.

BUTEX North American Scholarships
Scholarship is open to undergraduate students applying for select universities in the United Kingdom. See list of eligible members on website.

Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX)
CBYX is a yearlong fellowship program to study, work, and live with a host in Germany, and is for participants in business, engineering, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields. Deadline: December.

National Central University Summer Scholarship
2 summer scholarships for Chinese language learning at National Central University. Scholarship winners will pay USU tuition for the number of credits received for their program, but will not have to pay any additional fees to National Central University.

Spanish Government Scholarship for Language Study at Fundación​
For students studying abroad at Fundacion of La Rioja, in Spring 2019.

Freeman Asia Scholarship
Provides funding for U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) 
Undergraduate funding for Germany includes a monthly stipend, health insurance, and a lump sum for travel.

Japanese Government Scholarships
Apply through the USU Study Abroad Office. 
For students applying to partner schools in Japan. Deadlines vary depending on start dates of study.

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for U.S. Citizens
Study in Japan for undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language and/or Japanese culture. Ages 18 – 30.

Viadrina European University (VEU)
€360 Euro per month grants available for USU students who wish to study at VEU. See for courses of study. 

American Australian Association
Graduate or post-graduate students accepted to an Australian educational institution for 1 year.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program 
Provides funding for up to one academic year of study or research abroad, after graduation. Deadline: See USU Study Abroad Office.

Marshall Scholarship 
For graduate or undergraduate students studying at any British university.
