Statement of Support: Stop Anti-Asian Hostility

We in the Office of Global Engagement condemn violence, xenophobia, and all forms of racism, and are sickened by the recent attacks against the Asian communities in the U.S. In the past year, there has been an increase in anti-Asian violence, harassment, and discrimination, with a rise in violence against the senior citizens in the Asian community during the first few months of 2021. Former President Trump fueled the discrimination by stigmatizing COVID-19, referring to it as the Chinese or Wuhan virus. A year into the pandemic and the virus has reached all over the world, not discriminating based on race, ethnicity, or country of origin.

At Global Engagement we renew our commitment for inclusion, diversity, and standing for equality for all people, regardless of race, nationality, gender, or religion, and provide a welcoming place for our international students and scholars. Some USU students and scholars from Asian countries and Asian Americans have experienced racism and harassment within the community, with an increase in incidences starting in January 2020 when COVID-19 had reached the United States. We condemn these acts and stand with and support the Asian community.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and welcome at USU. We join with the Inclusion Center and Counseling and Psychological Services to continue to stand up and fight to disrupt and end racism, and to encourage others to stand with us.

Reporting Bias, Harassment, and Discrimination at USU

All students, scholars, faculty, and staff at USU have the right to work in an environment that protects and respects every individual, recognizing the various backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences that make up our community.
